A standoff between protestors, activist Boniface Mwangi (centre left) and the Reverand Timothy Njoya (centre) and police in Nairobi on 13 February 2014 after police banned a planned major protest organised by a group of civil societies. The protest, known as “State of the Nation”, was to start from Uhuru (Freedom) Park in Nairobi city centre and end up outside Parliament Buildings in order to protest against among other issues rising cases of corruption in government, insecurity, unemployment, poverty, mutilation of the constitution and poor leadership in the country. The police authorities said they banned the protest over security reasons in particular terrorism. “We will not allow them to hold the demo because there are so many security threats in the city. Some terrorists may join them and throw a grenade as it goes on and that is why we have banned it,” said Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue. The banning of this protest, the assertive blocking by the police of the entrance to Uhuru (Freedom) Park to the protestors, the use of rubber bullets and excessive amounts of tear gas, and the on-site arrest of the activist Boniface Mwangi are yet more examples of on-going crackdown Kenyans are seeing on a daily basis by the police and the State in general, actively reducing Kenyans' freedom of democracy and political rights.
